“A beautiful afternoon”: HopeWalk at St Swithun’s | 6th June 2026

(C) Emily Gooding

On the first day of Great Big Green Week, 6th June 2026, Hope4Creation and St Swithun’s Church in Kennington, Oxford, joined together to host a relaxed yet intentional time in nature. From tiny details underfoot to birdsong, leaves, insects, flowers and hidden corners of green space, the HopeWalk invited the community to slow down and notice the biodiversity around us.

Participants were given a HopeWalks booklet and invited to step into the bountiful grounds of St Swithun’s church to connect with nature. There was also a simple and accessible nature hunt, perfect for curious adults, children, families and anyone who enjoys being outdoors. Guests were given a map of the grounds and photos of twelve plants found in the grounds to find.

Over thirty guests were present and were treated to a wonderful talk by ethno-ornithologist Rev Prof Andy Gosler. Andy shared some fascinating insights into birds, asking the audience about the difference between doves and pigeons, before handing out mini-binoculars to the younger audience members to take out into the grounds.

The substantial downpours throughout the afternoon didn’t dampen spirits too much; partly because there was a significant amount of tea and delicious cake consumed to bolster enthusiasm. As soon as there was a break in the rain, people headed outside to connect with the natural world.

The event was a wonderfully nourishing time, despite the weather, with people really enjoying the opportunity to get closer to nature and appreciate the beauty and wonder of the world right in front of us. We offer heartfelt thanks to Reverend Samson at St Swithun’s, Reverend Professor Andy Gosler, our wonderful helpers on the day, and the people of Kennington who joined in so enthusiastically. We hope that we will be able to run more events like this!
